Adjusting the clutch.

The adjustment is under the dash on the master cylinder rod. Use a short 12mm open end wrench. Break the rear locking nut loose. Turn the rod in the direction you need to adjust with your fingers. Wiggling the pedal at the same time can make it easier to turn.

Manual Clutch Problems

If you want to give the clutch pedal more free play because the clutch is slipping or engaging high, then turn the rod towards the pedal. This will make the rod shorter as it screws into the nut. Try one to two turns and check that it still goes into gear smoothly. Adjust more if necessary. After adjustment is complete. Lock the 12 mm nut down.

If you want to take away play in the pedal due to hard shifting, then the method is the same as above, except you will be turning the rod towards the firewall to make the rod longer. Do not over tighten or this could make your clutch slip and wear prematurely. There should always be a little free play in the clutch pedal.

You can check the repair manual for the factory adjustment. Our rule of thumb is to adjust the clutch to where the vehicle just starts to move when the clutch pedal is approximately 2-3 inches off the floor and the transmission still shifts smoothly. This will allow for when the clutch wears and raises up. This may vary a little due to wear in clutch pedal etc.

We have been repairing clutches for over 30 years and felt that this was worth writing about. Hopefully it will save you from unnecessary repairs and frustration.
